Get Moving for a Healthy Heart: The REDFEB Heart Health Awareness Month

Writer's picture: Tyler PilTyler Pil

As part of REDFEB, Australia’s heart health awareness month this February, it’s the perfect

time to get moving and make a positive impact on your heart health. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death globally, but with the right lifestyle changes, including regular

exercise, you can significantly reduce your risk. Whether you're new to exercising or an

experienced fitness enthusiast, this REDFEB, we challenge you to embrace the power of

movement for a healthier heart!

Why Exercise Matters for Heart Health

Exercise is one of the most effective ways to improve your cardiovascular health. Regular

physical activity helps your heart become more efficient and lowers your risk of developing

heart disease. Here's how exercise benefits your heart:

  • Improves Circulation - Regular exercise strengthens the heart muscle, enabling it to

pump blood more efficiently.

  • Lowers Blood Pressure - Exercise helps maintain healthy blood pressure levels,

reducing the strain on your heart.

  • Reduces Cholesterol - Physical activity can help raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels

and lower bad cholesterol (LDL), promoting healthier arteries.

  • Weight Management - Staying active helps maintain a healthy weight, reducing the

risk of obesity, a major risk factor for heart disease.

  • Boosts Mental Health - Exercise has a positive impact on your mood and stress

levels, contributing to overall well-being.

REDFEB Exercise Challenge: Take the First Step!

This February, REDFEB encourages everyone to take part in an Exercise Challenge to

promote heart health. You don't need to run a marathon to make a difference. Simple daily

activities can have a significant impact on your heart.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Go for a Walk or Jog - Aim for 30 minutes of brisk walking or light jogging most days

of the week. It's one of the easiest and most accessible forms of exercise!

  • Join a Fitness Class - Activities like swimming, cycling, or group fitness classes. Are a

fun way to give your heart a great workout. If you are looking for a group fitness

class to join come see us at Geelong Rehabilitation Centre

  • Take the Stairs - Skip the elevator and take the stairs whenever possible. It's a small change that adds up over time.

Setting Heart-Healthy Goals

As part of the REDFEB campaign, set a heart-health goal for yourself this month. Whether

it is walking 10,000 steps a day or doing a weekly workout, make your goal achievable and

fun. Share your progress with friends, family, and social media to inspire others to join in!

You can also consider signing up for a fundraising walk, run, or other physical events as part

of REDFEB, combining exercise with fundraising for heart disease research.

Be Heart Smart: Listen to Your Body

While exercise is essential for heart health, it’s important to listen to your body and not

overdo it. If you’re just starting out, begin with low intensity exercises and gradually

increase intensity. For those with existing heart conditions or who haven’t been active in a

while, always consult a healthcare professional before starting a new exercise routine.

Final Thoughts: A Heart for REDFEB

This REDFEB, take the opportunity to commit to your heart health by incorporating more

movement into your daily routine. Whether you're walking, running, cycling, or lifting

weights, every bit counts towards a healthier heart. Plus, by participating in the REDFEB,

you're also contributing to raising awareness and funding for life-saving heart disease

research.

So, wear your red, get moving, and help spread the word: A healthy heart starts with

healthy habits!
